The South Las Vegas Strip is anchored by one large poker room at MGM Grand, and five small rooms. Most of the south strip poker rooms are populated by tourists, with a handful of locals. The exception is Tropicana, which offers many promotions that attract local grinders to help prop the games up.

Excalibur – The 12 table Excalibur Poker Room offers two cash games. The main game is a 1/2 No Limit Texas Hold’em game. There is also a 2-6 spread limit game with a single $2 blind that is offered during peak hours. The poker room at Excalibur offers four tournaments each day. The times for the tournaments are 9am, 1pm, 5pm, and 8pm.
Luxor – Underneath the pyramid in the desert, the 11 table Luxor Poker Room spreads one game. The game is 1/2 No Limit Texas Hold’em. The poker room at Luxor also offers tournaments each day at 10:30am, 12:30pm, and 8:30pm.
MGM will host three separate freeroll poker tournaments — one for each closed poker room — at the MGM Grand over the next month. Players can register for free for each event, but space is limited. Mandalay Bay – The Mandalay Bay Poker Room offers players many different promotions at their 10 table poker room. These promotions change on a daily basis. The game that runs around the clock is 1/2 No Limit Texas Hold’em. There are also five tournaments spread each day.
MGM Grand – The flagship of the South Las Vegas Strip, the 22 table poker room at MGM Grand offers multiple games that run often. Karina Jett has recently become the ambassador for this prestigious poker room. The main games are 1/2 and 2/5 No Limit Texas Hold’em, as well as a 4/8 fixed limit game. There are two daily tournaments at 11:05am and 7:05pm. There is also a HORSE tournament held every Tuesday at 7:15pm. The MGM Grand Poker Room is also home to the Grand Challenge Tournament Series. This series offers not just No Limit Texas Hold’em tournaments, but also Pot Limit Omaha, Omaha High/Low, Seven Card Stud High/Low, and HORSE.
Monte Carlo – Monte Carlo offers a poker room that is set away from the casino floor, giving players a private setting free of smoke and other casino annoyances. The main game at the Monte Carlo Poker Room is 1/3 No Limit Texas Hold’em. There is also a 2-6 spread limit game offered upon request. At 9am, 6pm, and 11pm, there is a No Limit Hold’em tournament. Every Wednesday the tournaments have a $10 bounty in addition to the standard entry fee.
Tropicana – The Tropicana Poker Room is home to Jamie Gold, winner of the 2006 World Series of Poker Main Event in 2006. Tropicana has many promotions that reward players for putting in long hours. Players can earn up to $12 an hour in prop pay, up to 12 hours in a day. This attracts many tough local players to keep the games going. To pay for this promotion, there is a jackpot rake of up to $3 in addition to the standard rake. The main game is 1/2 No Limit Texas Hold’em. There is also a fixed limit game during some peak hours, typically a 2/4 game. On Mondays, there is a 4/8 mixed game. The poker room at Tropicana offers four daily tournaments, all of which have a high house juice associated with them.
MGM Grand is located on the south end of the Las Vegas Strip. The MGM Grand Poker Room is home to 22 tables. The poker room was recently remodeled and has moved back to its original location, after spending months in a temporary location near the old Lion Habitat that recently closed.
The main game at MGM Grand is a 1/2 No Limit Texas Hold’em game with a $60-$300 buyin range. A 2/4 fixed limit game is also common. During peak times, a 4/8 fixed limit game and 2/5 no limit game with a $200-$1000 buyin range may be found. MGM Grand no longer offers their beginners game, which featured $.50/$1 blinds.
MGM Poker Facilities
The MGM Poker Room offers several amenities, although they lag a bit behind other high end rooms. The tables and chairs are in top notch shape. There are TVs, but they are small and some seats have an obstructed view. All tables have automatic shufflers. Players can order food to the table 24 hours a day. While there is drink service, players may not receive comped shots of liquor while at the table. Players may receive a massage while at the table, but players cannot use their comps to purchase them. Poker players may use the valet service free of charge, including tip. The poker room will give players a $3 voucher to use when tipping the valet.
Smoke and Noise Levels When Playing Poker
The poker room ranks about average for smoke. The room is somewhat walled off by different parts of the building, but it still borders the casino floor. A nearby nightclub causes some excessive noise from time to time during major party hours.
Comps Offered to Poker Players
In addition to the valet tip, players can expect the typical $1 an hour when clocked in with their M Life card. The $1 an hour may be used for hotel room charges or food. Poker players that average four hours a day will qualify for the casino rate in the hotel. The discount is 20% off of the advertised rate.
Alternatives to Texas Holdem at the MGM
Every Tuesday there is a $120 HORSE tournament. In addition to the tournament, a HORSE game may break out after players bust out. MGM Grand will spread any game if there is enough interest.

MGM Grand Poker Tournaments
The poker room at MGM Grand offers two No Limit Texas Hold’em tournaments each day. The tournaments start at 11:05am and 7:05pm. Each morning tournament is a $60+$20 with 6000 in tournament chips and 20 minute levels. The evening tournaments are also $60+$20 Sunday-Thursday, but on Friday and Saturday the tournament is $100+$25. This tournament starts with 10,000 in tournament chips and has 30 minute levels. Players may late register or reenter these tournaments during the first six levels. On Tuesdays at 7:15pm, there is a $100+$20 HORSE tournament. Levels move up every 20 minutes. Each game is dealt 8 times before moving to the next game.

MGM Grand also offers the Grand Challenge Tournament Series. Events include No Limit Texas Hold’em, Omaha High/Low, Seven Card Stud High/Low, HORSE, Pot Limit Omaha, and Pot Limit Omaha High/Low. The entry fees range from $125+$25 up to $1500+$100 for the main event.
Waiting Lists
The MGM Grand Poker Room uses the Genesis Poker System for waitlists, as well as player clock in for comps. They do not share this information with the Bravo Poker app. While the MGM Poker Room is on Twiiter @mgmgrandpoker, they only tweet about tournaments. Players must call or show up to the poker room to find out what cash games are running. Players may call in advance to get on the waiting list for games.

Players arriving from Las Vegas Boulevard can enter through the front doors and walk past the entry retail area. The poker room is just ahead. Players that come in from the pedestrian bridge from Tropicana must go down an escalator that ends right across from the poker room. Players coming from the New York New York pedestrian bridge should go down the escalator and make a right. The poker room will be just beyond the bar and retail area. When coming from valet or taxi drop off, make a left. Follow the left wall of the casino floor. The poker room will be on the right.
While there is a Las Vegas Monorail Station at MGM Grand, it is in the back of the massive property. To find the poker room, follow the walkway to the casino floor. From there, follow the left walkway past the front desk and table games pit. The poker room will eventually be on your right. The walking distance is 10-15 minutes from the monorail to the poker room.
